Roasted Crab & Garlic Noodles

I've never been to Crustacean, but have plenty of friends/relatives who rave about their crab & garlic noodles and now I know one of the reasons why. BUTTER! It's one of the magic ingredients in both the crab and the noodles. My sister's boyfriend Pat, whose new foodie name is Pat-strami, (clever, right?) found an adapted recipe online and kindly made it for my Mom's recent birthday dinner.

It was an impressive dish and incited plenty of oohs and aahs, but surprisingly not difficult to make (as long as you're ok with cooking live crabs) says Patstrami, who easily bought all the ingredients at local Asian market Sunset Super. Sweet roasted crab coated in butter and garlic, with hot, chewy, garlicky (who knew there was cheese hidden in there?) noodles on the side. The crab was delicious, I didn't even mind getting totally messy, and the noodles...well I could have devoured the entire plate myself (even Duff from the Food Network says it was one of the Best Things He Ever Ate.) It doesn't get much better than this. Thanks Patstrami!

CRUSTACEAN-INSPIRED ROASTED CRAB & GARLIC NOODLES
garlic noodle recipe adapted from CD Kitchen
total prep time: 20-25 min / total cooking time: 40-45 min

GARLIC NOODLE INGREDIENTS
16 oz. package of fresh Chinese noodles (medium size)
1-1 1/2 tbsp of garlic, minced through a garlic press
4 tbsp of butter
2 tbsp olive oil
2 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tsp
Maggi seasoning
1/2 tsp sugar
2-3 tbsp grated Parmesan cheese
parsley, chopped (optional)

GARLIC NOODLE INSTRUCTIONS
Boil the noodles according to package, but only cook 3/4 of the way.
* You want the noodles al-dente because you will cook/saute them some more later.
Rinse the noodles in cold water and set aside.
In a large skillet/pan, saute the garlic with the butter and olive oil. Keep the heat on medium/low to make sure the garlic doesn't brown/burn. Cook for about 3-4 minutes until the garlic is cooked through.
Add the noodles to the garlic mixture along with the oyster sauce, Maggi seasoning and sugar.
Turn heat to high and mix everything together (about 3-4 minutes).
Once the noodles are heated through, turn off heat and add the Parmesan.
Mix again, sprinkle chopped parsley on top and serve.

ROASTED CRAB INGREDIENTS
1
Dungeness crab (about 2 lbs.)
1 tbsp olive oil
6 tbsp butter
4-5 cloves garlic, minced through a press
1 tsp chicken bouillon powder (optional)
2 tsp cracked black pepper, cracked with a mortar & pestle
1/2 tsp sugar

ROASTED CRAB INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat oven to 350˚F.
Clean and chop crab into small pieces.
Heat the butter in a wok (between medium and low heat) and saute the garlic until aromatic, but not brown.
Add the black pepper, chicken bouillon powder (optional) and mix well.
Add in the sugar and cook until crab is cooked halfway.
Remove from wok and place on a foil lined baking sheet/pan and roast in oven for 15-20 minutes.
Serve with hot garlic noodles.

* Special Mention: I can't stop thinking about the birthday cake we got my Mom from Yasukochi's Sweet Stop! I've been a lifelong fan of coffee crunch cake, but this was my first time having a lemon crunch cake, ever. It was light, luscious, zesty, crunchy, genius. I'm a fan! Addiecakes if you are reading this - can you please try making this, please???

Isn't it amazing how simple the crab and noodles are? I've been making a variation of this for a couple of years but this one sounds good too!

Have you tried the chocolate crunch cake? So good! I love that the texture is not dense.

I never would have imagined oyster sauce and parmesan cheese in the same recipe!

And for roasted crab, I recommend PPQ on Clement. It always seemed as good as Thanh Long to me, but much more affordable!

@Cyndi - WHAT they have a chocolate crunch cake too? Thanks for turning me on to that - I totally have to try it now. Let's see, who's birthday's coming up next... :)

@I. Yah - I've tried PPQ too - it is yummy. Messy, but yummy! Another place for good, afforable crab is R & G Lounge in Chinatown!

I am the proud girlfriend of Patstrami, the indulgent sister of Samiwich, and the lucky daughter of our Mom, whose birthday it was the night of this crab and garlic noodle feast! (I'm thinking our Mom's food name should be Mom-dog, for her love of hot dogs and corndogs! Or maybe LeMom Meringue Pie?)

This was the first time Patstrami ever tried to make garlic noodles. They turned out so well, I think I've had him make them at least two to three times since then!

The lemon crunch cake from Yasukochi's Sweet Shop was simply divine. We liked it so much, I'm ordering it again for Patstrami's upcoming birthday! I've tried the famous coffee crunch, and look forward to trying the chocolate crunch cake one day too!

I'm still thinking about my food name! ;)

Great blog, Samiwich and Addiecakes!

A beautiful blog Samiwich and Addiecakes! Thank you for sharing all of this. It looks like my little foodie LilChew (Matthew, 11), is pushing for us to try these recipes. Unfortunately, dungeness crab is a little harder to come by in Florida (last price seen was $8.99/lb). Oh, and thanks alot. Now he's asking me what Yasukochi's Coffee Crunch Cake is like. How am I supposed to work that from here? Is Moses still working, or have the kids picked up the business? Keep up the great blog; we'll be watching for more. -RobYee

Hi Rob! Great to hear from you, thanks for the nice comments! LilChew - I love it! Tell him I'm trying to talk Addiecakes into testing out some coffee crunch cake recipes...and hopefully we'll post a recipe that you guys can make together someday! Thanks for reading and hope you guys are doing well in Florida!

If you go to the Sweet Stop early enough in the day you can snag a slice of chocolate crunch without having to buy a whole cake. So good! I like it better than the coffee crunch as the chocolate candy isn't as sweet so it's not as overwhelming.

Hi guys!
Just want to say this was awesome, made it tonight because crab was $2.99 per lb.
1. Spot on recipe - did not add the maggi and the cheese, will do that next batch.
2. Crab was great. Instead I chowed it on high for a shorter time but making sure all the hot butter/garlic marinate coats and seeps in the crab.
3. It's really easy that I want to say going to TL is not required/almost overrated (not saying I make it as good, but decent) but of course for those who can't boil water, well they just have to keep spending $100+ for 2 crabs/noodles and wine.

Thanks for sharing!!!!
Bobby

@Robert - HI!!!! Glad it turned out - thanks for the update! Where did you find crab for $2.99? Ranch 99? And I've tried it w/o the Maggi too - just as tasty! Thanks for the note!
